DBAN is a tool that some find useful. All this installing, updating, uninstalling, ad infinite, can be simplified somewhat by swapping drives, wiping, replacing, etc. I've also seen posts where drives were trashed?? I doubt it but regardless. Spare drives or pulled drives can sometimes be fixed with DBAN Several years ago when I ran across DBAN there was also a report that the majority of HDDs returned to manufacturers were found to be serviceable. User had a problem and sent them back for replacement. I looked around and found 21 drives, in old machines, in the bad box under the bench, and still installed but not working in currently used machines.
I installed DBAN on an old XP test machine. Each test takes some time so a test machine is the way to go. I tested the 21 drives over a period of time and DBAN returned 19 of the 21 as serviceable.

In this review of DBAN I mention that it’s not the most user friendly product, but if you give it a couple stabs more often than not you’ll succeed. Keep in mind DBAN is open source and free. Commercial products often come with support where as open source, not so much. Now on to the DBAN review. Darik’s boot and nuke is Free Software one can use to boot and nuke your HDD (hard drive).
Software Disk Erase Solutions But with so many open source and commercial software based solutions to erase your hard drive one might wonder what is the best and why? Lets review my top solutions one can use to nuke your hard drive. – free open source and works for a lot of systems. ( if you can’t burn it to disk yourself) Requires a working computer that can boot to disk or flash drive.
has a bare-bones disk wipe package but I, this will give you SSD and HDD wipe plus backup and other PC utilities. WipeDrive is a long time favorite of mine.
Sometime but check their. Software based solutions will need to be ran from a disk or USB flash drive. They usually work with most systems and can be a little more difficult to figure out. However, they are cheaper than hardware based solutions.

Software based solutions like DBAN, Paragon and WipeDrive are typically much slower than hardware based solutions. Hardware Based Disk Erase Solutions – Erase SSD and HDD drives quick and easy.
Hardware based disk wiping solutions are much faster and easier the software based solutions. They are so fast that many business / enterprise level users use them before discarding computers.
But as a home user they are still affordable enough that at the lower end I could see buying one simply due to the ease of use. If you don’t know which type of hard drive you have I recommend buying one that does both. As technology progresses and as SSD gets cheaper I would imagine that most devices will come standard with SSD.
DBAN versus Commercial Software DBAN is a free disk eraser located on source forge which will wipe most hard drives clear of all data. Many commercial software scrubbers claim they are military grade tech and trusted by government agencies and major corporations as their primary disk wipe utility. No matter what you choose, if you invest money in the software/hardware please ensure it wipes external hard drives, thumb drives, memory cards, SSD, HDD, SDHD, SDXD, iPods, MAC, etc. as the higher end options I’ve listed do. Erase your hard drive with DBAN & other external media. Support for all PC and Mac Computers (Intel, AMD & PowerPC). If you don’ t mind paying a little cash I feel the commercial options are clearly the way to go. They’re easier to use and can be used to wipe the drive of many of your hardware devices which contain a hard disk.
Keep in mind during this review that if you lack a little geek in your blood DBAN could be difficult to get going however, with a little perseverance even the faint of heart can get DBAN to do what they need it to do. Feel free to ask questions below in the comment section. “Darik’s Boot and Nuke (”DBAN”) is a self-contained boot program that securely wipes the hard disks of most computers. DBAN will automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can detect, which makes it an appropriate utility for bulk or emergency data destruction on your hdd. The most recent release is beta DBAN 2.2.6.
In order to install DBAN wants you to burn the file to a blank disc and boot the computer with it. Do not unzip this file. DBAN is a means of ensuring due diligence in computer recycling, a way of preventing identity theft if you want to sell a computer, and a good way to totally clean a Microsoft Windows installation of viruses, malware, and spyware. DBAN prevents or thoroughly hinders all known techniques of hard disk forensic analysis. This means it writes over the existing data making it virtually impossible to recover the data it over wrote. Both wipe drive and dariks boot and nuke are great options to erase your hard drive. All of these utilities will permanently wipe your hard drive clean with military grade “scrubbing” which simply means the software writes over your hard disk so many times it becomes unreadable with today’s technology.
Now one might ask “How do I use dban to erase my hard drive?” well I’m glad you asked! Below I’ll give you two simple to use instructions to autonuke your hard drive clean.
There are two ways to accomplish this, I’ll review both ways in simple form then break down the USB Flash installation in more detail. 1 – load dban to a CD, 2 – install dban on a USB flash drive Simple dban CD install instructions – DBAN 2.x only:.
Download the most recent version of DBAN 2.x. Burn the ISO to CD. Insert the CD into your CD ROM. Reboot your computer.
Follow the prompts Installing DBAN on a floppy or USB flash drive DBAN version 1.0.7 allows you to install the dban to flash drive or floppy disk. Hello I have a notebook system with Vista, no floppy. I downloaded the software on a CD-R. I may have to use a USB flash device. With this Vista where do I locate the prompt?
I turned off the system with the power switch then when I power it up it asks if I want to logg in safe mode, or command prompt? I selected command prompt. Then I selected the drive letter E: dir Then typed as instructed: autonuke. The system answered: “Autonuke is not recognized as an internal or external command, opereable program or batch file.” looking for a.exe command? What do I do? Use a USB flash device for this area? I am so happy for so many wonderful responses of this utility.
I really want to format Vista. LOL Mike. says. You must use an account with full hardware access to create the DBAN boot media. This means that you must be a member of the administrators group or have similar privileges on your Microsoft Windows computer. Virus scanners and domain policies can prevent you from creating the DBAN boot media. The USB booting capabilities of many computers are incomplete or broken.
Most computers capable of booting from a USB device require that it report a removable media type, and that it be unpartitioned and smaller than two gigabytes (so that the BIOS can boot it like a floppy disk). If the drive letter of your USB device does not appear in WinImage drive list, then it is an unsupported media type. In particular, most USB+IDE bridge implementations are unrecognized, which means that a 2.5 inch hard disk in an external USB enclosure is incompatible. I tried to use my recovery window 7 cd’s. When I put #1cd in, it asked if I had another disk that had no label. I inserted it, was asked to either back up or not and I chose not to back up.
It then informed me that my hard drive was smaller than when originally installed and I couldn’t use that cd. I used only the four cd’s labelled 1-4 without the extra one. I now am having problems with my computer updating. Will using DBAN help me or will it somehow not do anything to the size of the hard drive?
I tried getting the free windows 10 upgrade without success, thus the recovery.I’m wondering if not being able to use the unlabelled disc stopped installation of something my computer needed. @Todd – this is why I tell people to use WipeDrive to late for you now =( DBAN works well but if you’re not a geek and things get hairy this is where you can find yourself. Are you getting any options at all? Can you choose advanced installation during the boot up? If the CD drive isn’t loading period, no windows installation options, I recommend you reformat your hard drive. How old is the PC? Can you post a screen shot of what you see when you put in the windows DVD – Also can you take a photo of the windows DVD and post it online at a place like.
Caren says. I’ve been in touch by phone with the WipeDrive tech support folks (White Canyon Software). The newest version of WipeDrive (v. Six) will NOT, I repeat NOT, work on the old PowerPC Macs, and neither will version Five.
It only works on the newer Intel Macs. There used to be a separate version (back around the time of v.3) for Macs that came with 2 discs, one for PowerPC and one for Intel Macs. But it’s not made anymore, and they don’t have any of the old discs hanging around. Sooooo, I have an old PowerPc G4 that I want to do a Dept. Of Defense wipe on, and I can’t get it done. The Mac disc utility can be used to wipe the disc up to 35 times, but only if I connect my Mac to another Mac, and wipe the connected drive from there.
I do not have access to another Mac, this option won’t work for me, and you can’t do a secure wipe on the drive you’re using, it won’t let you. So what are my options here?
The DBAN stuff is unlikely to work well on my old machine, and I’m not techie enough to get through all the complicated instructions. WipeDrive works great, I’ve used it many times, but I’ve never been stopped cold with a PowerPC Mac before. The answer seems to be to get ahold of an old WipeDrive disc, but I can’t find a copy (I’m scouring the Internet, Craigslist, eBay, etc., no such luck).
Does ANYONE know how I might obtain a copy? I’m out of options. Thanks for the help: ). Kurt says. Hey, I am currently wiping a drive using DBAN CD boot option, because I acquired some sort of virus/trojan or some sort of malware that has allowed hackers onto my computer and all else seems to have failed. I made an attempt to run Xubuntu 12.04 as a fresh install on the drive without wiping it first, so obviously the hacker was able to locate the file again.
Anyways, I backed up my documents and booted DBAN. It seems to be working fine, however there is one concern.
Prior to starting the service, DBAN listed the drives and it had one that was odd: “???? Unknown Device” or something along those lines and to the bottom of that was my HDD “dev/sda” but the space was limited to 117GB out of a total of 120GB.
Is it possible for the virus to be inside that “????”? And if so, what, if anything can I do to delete that? Thanks in advance!
Hi Kurt; I have an old Dell PC with Windows Vista that has been sitting unused in my Den for a couple of years. I would like to recycle the computer and wanted to get all my information wiped off the HD before I send it in. I downloaded the latest version of DBAN (2.2.7i586) and burned it to a CD. After changing my boot options the program started with no problem. However, when I run DBAN on Autonuke or Interactive Mode, it runs for only a few seconds and comes back with the message “DBAN finished with non-fatal errors.” Below that message are six messages that say “ERROR /dev/sde (process crash),” Furthermore, when I go to “Interactive Mode,” it has four rows stating “????
Unrecognized Device.” Above my one hard drive listing (even when I check the one hard drive to be deleted, the error persists). The only external devices I have hooked up to my computer agree my mouse, keyboard and monitor (I kind of need those to use the computer!) so I have NO idea what these devices are. DBAN will detect hardware such as SD card readers, USB devices etc etc that are connected internally to your mother board and display them as “???? unrecognizable device” which causes the dev/sda (process crash) error.
Boot DBAN from a CD or DVD. After it loads instead of using “autonuke,” select interactive mode. After a few seconds you will see: (description of your hard drive here) But if you see this: ???? unrecognizable device (description of your hard drive here) This will give you the following nonfatal error: Error: dev/sda (process crash) There are several solutions. 1.) You can use the settings in your BIOS to disable all excess hardware on your mother board such as SD card readers and other things not essential.
2.) If you have a desktop you can crack it open and physically disconnect excess hardware. Solution 3 Download partedmagic and then burn the ISO to a disk like you did with DBAN. When you boot from the disk you will see different options. Choose boot into system memory or you can choose nothing as it will time out and default to the correct setting we want. Parted magic should start up in a windows like environment.
On the desktop, double click “Disk Eraser.” When disk eraser starts there will be an option to run DBAN. This will allow you to use DBAN and bypass all those errors or you can use one of the other tools provided. This is a very quick solution. Solution 4 Use wipedrive. Caren says.
When I get to the screen where it shows where do you want to install windows, the disk partition with my primary hard drive has a caution symbol at the bottom and reads that windows cannot be installed to disk partition 2, and when you click to show details on why it can’t it reads the disk may fail soon if there is another location install windows there??? I was able to bring up a command prompt and entered diskpart and activated the partition I’m trying to install windows on, but still get the same message? In section 2.2 above it states that there is a tutorial at the dban website under faq that shows how to use windows to burn the dban ISO to a cd-r, but there is no such tutorial, anymore, or it is in some obscure place due to poor web organization. If it is still there could you please direct me to it. Also, I have burn the dban iso image to three different cd-r s and none can be read by my bd drive even after setting boot sequence to boot from bd drive first. Any ideas/solutions? Thanks in advance.
If you’re burning a true ISO, it should work. But since it’s not then I suggest you put dban on a USB thumb drive and boot to that! Download the dban-2.xxxxxxxxxx.iso Download and run Universal USB Installer, select dban-2.xxxxxxxxxx.iso from the drop down list and follow the onscreen instructions Once the installation to USB is complete, restart your PC and set your BIOS or Boot Menu to boot from the USB device, save your changes and reboot Once she comes up follow the menu options. It may happen the same way on the usb if I don’t figure out the problem. My computer is majorly infected so I am going to the library to burn the iso image to a cd-r which does not give me administrator privileges. Are these needed to burn the iso?
I have read that burning the iso too fast, which occurs at the library (it burns in about 20 seconds) may cause a deficient iso image? After downloading at the library computer, the screen shows a rectangle with the dban in it and I then burn that to a cd-r.
I have checked the cd-r at the library to look at the files on the cd-r and I can see a list of files, but I can not look at it on my computer at home. The disc drive just ignores the disc in it, even though my computer shows the disc drive. (I have had nothing but problems with windows 8.) Any further ideas?
I am having a lot of trouble right now with running my Darik's Boot and Nuke, because I cannot seem to start it up at all. It just says that the file configuration is not found or something. And it says this on a black screen. And this is really annoying and it is also making me frustrated, bigtime. So what I am doing wrong here, and why is this not working for? By the way, what should my Boot sequence order be in also? But I still can't get it to work at all.
Man, I don't know why this is happening to me! I must be doing something totally wrong. I think the problem is that I am supposed to put something onto a floppy disk first. Then I put something onto my CD-R disc afterwards. But I don't have the slightest clue on how to do this at all.
So please explain this to me step-by-step, so I understand on what is going on here. So that way I will not be confused about this important stuff. So please get back to me as soon as possible, because I really want to wipe out my computer a lot.
It has been very slow and laggy lately. So don't forget to get back to me soon.
I will be waiting for my response from you! So thank you very much now. Download the DBAN iso from here: 2. Once you have saved it to your PC burn it to a CD with a program like (or Nero/NTI/EasyCDCreator/CDBurnerXP etc) 3. Once you have written it to CD restart the PC and enter the BIOS. Change the boot sequence so that the CD/DVD/Optical drive is the first boot device.
Save your changes 4. Boot with your CD. Note that if your hard drive/CD Drive is connected via a RAID or SATA controller DBAN might not recognize your hard drive (Although DBAN does contain drivers for a few RAID/SATA controllers).
If this is the case you will have to enter the BIOS again and search through the options looking for your hard drive controller type and change it from RAID/AHCI/Enhanced to Legacy/IDE and then try again. Quote: Preview Releases DBAN 2.2.6 Beta for CD-R and DVD-R media. (Burn this file to a blank disc and boot the computer with it. Do not unzip this file.) 2 Burn it to a new CD (you may have been using a faulty CD) using (use a slow burn like x4 as faster burning can sometimes cause a mis-burn) Or what ever burning software you prefer.
3 You will now have to change the boot order (see attached images for some help, these are from my computer so it will look slightly different on yours) for your computer in BIOS so that the hard drive won't be the first boot device, but instead the CD will. To do this press either DEL or F2 (this will vary depending on your motherboard, but when you first start your computer you should see an option to do this before the operating system kicks in) If you are unsure which button to press, then post your system specs here and we can tell you. If you don't know them, download and run the program. When it's finished generating the information, go to the 'About' tab, and at the bottom, hit the 'Save as html' button and then attach that to your next post, so we can help you out more. 4 When you get to BIOS go to the Advanced BIOS Features tab (use your up/down/left/right arrow keys and the Enter button to open). The name of this may again vary on your computer due to the different ways BIOS appears on different PC's. Change the boot order from Hard Disk to CD, and press F10 to confirm your decision followed by 'Y' (yes) and hit Enter.
The system will now reboot. Make sure you have the Darik's Boot and Nuke CD/DVD in the tray 5 As the computer boots up, you will be prompted to 'Press any key' to boot from CD. Just tap the spacebar a few times and Darik's Boot and Nuke will start. Is a good tutorial on how to use Darik's Boot and Nuke once you are at the screen. Make sure that you don't have any USB sticks still inserted or external HDD's attached to the computer or you might accidently wipe those as well. You don't have to wipe using 35 passes as 3 or 7 will be sufficient to securely remove all sensitive data. I have attached some images that may help, but there is a limitation of 2 images per post, so I have placed 4 of the BIOS images into one.
Hopefully this all make sense. Any questions, just ask. Edit Just seen AlbertMC2's post. Sorry, took a while to type up. Do as AlbertMC2 suggests. Thanks for getting back to me on this stuff, I really appreciate it a lot from you.
I tried to do what you told me to do, but my bios is really old and outdated. And my bios is not even a blue screen like yours! My bios is pretty old and crappy like from 2004, and it doesn't even the Advanced bios settings in my bios! That really sucks a lot. But I think that I am supposed to flash my bios, because it is really old and outdated. And I do not think I even have hyper-threading in my PC. Because my bios is really old.
So should I upgrade and flash my bios? But I have no idea on how to do this process. And that's probably why I cannot even start up my Darik's Boot and Nuke on my computer. I don't even have hyperthreading at all on my computer!
I am so mad and upset about this situation that I am in right now. So all I am asking here is that you please help me out on what I should do in order to fix this awful problem that I am having. By the way, just so you know I have a Dell Dimension 4600 with XP Professional and Service Pack 2 with that.
Also, it has a Pentium 4 processor with that course. I remember I just got my computer in 2004.
And it might have had hyper-threading in the bios, or maybe it didn't have it at all! I called Dell yesterday, and I talked to them about how to enable my hyper-threading. And they said that I don't have hyper-threading anymore, because my PC warranty information was old and had expired. And when they told me this over the phone, I got really upset to myself and I was really mad too. But I got over it, I guess. But what I am thinking is that my computer used to have hyper-threading on it, but the warranty is no good anymore, so I guess that's what happened. Is that correct?
So I should have renewed my warranty or got a new one for gods sakes. That wasn't smart at all what I did! But I guess I learned my lesson for good. But I could get a new warranty, but it was very expensive and they could probably charge me too.
Anyway, I won't get into the details about it, or else I will be upset with this. So what I think is that I should get a new and a much better PC, that's for sure.
I kept telling my Mom that I need a new computer, but she just won't let me buy a new one! But I will just save my money up for a new one, that's for sure. I really need a new PC as soon as possible, that's for sure. Well anyway, sorry for this long letter, but I am trying to make a point here on what I am saying to you. So I have no idea at all on how to flash my bios, enable my hyper-threading or run DBan from my CD-R disc. So please read this letter, it is very important to me.
And don't forget to get back to me as soon as you possibly can. I am still here, and I am not going anywhere.
So don't forget now, I will be waiting for a response from you! So thanks a lot now. Hi jordanllgg45, Before we look into flashing you BIOS as this may or may not be required, can you confirm that you are intending on completely wiping your hard drive Darik's Boot and Nuke and then re-installing XP with a Windows XP Disk that you must have in order to do the re-install once the disk has been wiped.
Also, have you got everything backed up from the computer (pictures, music etc) saved to an external hard drive or CD/DVD, as you won't be ale to get them back once Darik's Boot and Nuke has finished wiping. If you don't have a Windows XP disk in order to do a re-install, then we may be able to help you get rid of some of the programs that may be causing your system to have become laggy over time. This would probably be the better solution rather that doing a complete re-install, unless of course you want to have a clean version of XP installed. If you would like us to see if we can speed up the overall performance of your computer then I would like you to do two things:- 1 Can you download and install and run it.
Let it generate all the information (shouldn't take long) then go FileSave and save the AutoRuns.arn file to the desktop. Zip it (right click on the.arn file and select 'send to' and choose 'Compressed zipped folder) and attach it back. Basically want to have a look and see if we can figure out what may be interfering. 2 Can you post your system specs. If you don't know them, download and run the program. When it's finished generating the information, go to the 'About' tab, and at the bottom, hit the 'Save as html' button and then attach that to your next post. If you do have a Windows XP Disk and want to wipe the hard drive using Darik's Boot and Nuke disk that you have previously created, then on the Dell Dimension 4600 you should be able to press F12 (keep taping it until the boot order menu comes up) as the computer is first booting to change the boot order that way.
Set it to boot to CD as first boot device and then reboot, making sure that the Darik's Boot and Nuke disk that you have previously created is in the CD tray. Then when the program runs from the disk, refer to the that I Linked in the previous post. I'm sorry to tell you this, but my bios is not blue. It is like a grey background with white text. And I am really upset about this situation that I am in.
Because I cannot seem to enable my hyper-threading in my bios. Because the option is NOT there! Man, my bios is outdated and really old.
But I mean that there must be a certain way to flash my my bios somehow. Do you know any helpful sites out there that really explain this to me well, so that I can flash my bios easily? Because I would appreciate that a lot from you. So anyways, just let me know on what to do here, and please cheer me up on this issue that I am having. Don't forget to get back to me as soon as you can. So thank you very much now. My computer is the Dell 4700, very similar. My BIOS is Mostly Blue, some grey (in color).
Don't worry about the color of the Bios. On most Dell computers, to change the boot order, you would press F12 at bootup and choose CD rom drive as first boot device. Now if you downloaded the ISO image for Boot and Nuke, then you must burn the image to CD,not just copy it. Once you have made a boot disc then boot off of the newly created CD and run the program which will totally erase (format) the drive so there is nothing on it. Then you would have to Boot off of the XP CD to install Windows. I have read those bios instructions that they have given me before, but I couldn't understand on what they were talking about at all.
They said to download the file to the Desktop, and then they said to click Download Now. But I don't know what they are talking about here because I went to the Dell site, and I did not see a Download Now button to click on. I really don't have any clue on how to flash my bios still. I mean they helped me out somewhat, but not all that much yet. Also, there are some other bioses for my Dimension 4600 that say Flash Bios, instead of System bios. So maybe I should try to download the Flash bios instead of my own bios, which is my system bios. But A12 is the latest version of my bios, I know that.
But some of the bioses that say Flash bios are older than A12, like A07 and A03. But it says Flash bios here, not System bios. So that was a very important piece of information that I just wanted to share with you, right there. Well anyway, please get back to me with answers on how I should do this step-by-step, the easy way with no problems. So this way, I would have a much better understand on how to do this.
You know what I'm saying? So thanks a lot now for your time, and I will be waiting for a response from you soon. So thank you very much now. I think that I am going to forget about my Darik's Boot and Nuke for a while, because I do not want to mess up my computer, that's for sure.
Because I am afraid it might not start up or something. So I do not want to go there. So instead, can you explain to me how to use the Dell PC Restore feature? Because this way, my computer will restore everything back to it's own factory settings, like just when I bought it in 2004. That's when I first purchased my computer. Also, I cannot seem to find my hyper-threading option to enable or disable in my bios. Because my bios is very old and outdated.
But I have no idea on how to flash it at all. But I have already been to the Dell site many times, but the latest version of my bios is A12. But when I am in my bios, I look under the CPU Information section there, and my hyper-threading option is not there at all. It is missing there in my bios. Also, in my Task Manager I only have 1 stupid CPU graph! But I wish that I had 2 CPU graphs, instead of one.
And also, just to let you know that when I am in the Performance section in my Task Manager, I go my CPU History, and it says 'One Graph Per CPU' there. But the 'One Graph, All CPU's' option is not there yet. I think I know why now that this is actually happening. It would say 'All Graphs, One CPU' there, but the reason it's not saying that is because my hyper-threading is disabled, I believe. Is that correct? And probably that is why I cannot enable or disable it in my bios. Because my bios is old and outdated.
And that means I should flash my bios so that it gets updated! But maybe you can help me figure this out on why this is happening to me for. Because I would really appreciate that a lot from you. And now, I would like to figure out on how to use the Dell PC Restore feature. So how do I do this? Do I press Alt and my F11 keys at the same time when my computer first boots up?
Because I tried this many times, and I cannot seem to get it to work at all. But I would really like to try and figure this out, so that I can get my computer back to it's original factory settings, like just when I first bought it. Because then I will be much happier, that's for sure.
And then maybe my hyper-threading enable and disable option will come back in my bios! Or maybe my bios never had that option. Well anyway, sorry for this really long letter, but I am trying to make a point here so you understand me more clearly.
All righty then? So please don't forget to get back to me as soon as soon as you can. I will be waiting for a response from you very soon! So thank you very much now for your time.
I'm guessing by the fact you tried DBaN that you want to shred the whole hard drive, meaning everything including operating system will be un-recoverable from your PC. If so, you could try using the 'dd' command with a Linux LiveCD. LiveCDs allow you to boot the operating system (Linux) off a CD, so you can do whatever you want with the hard-disk.
'dd' is a simple command-line copying program that comes with pretty much every version of Linux ever. The task is to boot from your CD drive using a LiveCD, and then use dd to copy random data to your hard-disk until it's all filled. Step 1: Download a LiveCD for some Linux distro - many of their installation ISO files double as bootable LiveCDs now so people can try before they install to disk. We only need it for the LiveCD bit though. Step 2: Burn the ISO image to a CDR Step 3: With the CDR in your CD drive, restart the PC.
It should recognise there's a bootable CD in there and start from that rather than your hard disk. If not, you may have to quickly press F12 or something during your computer's start-up to enter a boot-menu, where you can select the CD drive. Step 4: Once you've fully booted into the LiveCD operating system, open the 'terminal'. This is Linux's command line. There's usually a menu called 'applications' or something at the top of the screen, which will have it somewhere.
Step 5: In the terminal, type the following exactly: sudo dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sda conv=noerror and hit return. If that doesn't work, try 'hda' instead of 'sda'.
You want to put the label of your computer's hard drive in there, in any case. Step 6: Wait a long time. It will do nothing until it's finished, and then it will tell you the number of bytes read & written in the terminal. That's it, you're done. If you take the CD out and try to start your PC normally (off the hard-drive), it should fail. There's nothing there now but random numbers.
The random data that dd uses is not as clever as all the dedicated shredding algorithms you can get, in fact mathematicians could tell you lots of ways the data isn't properly 'random'. But this method is simple and sure - all you're doing is booting off something other than your main disk, before copying (somewhat) random data to said disk.
